The apricot trees under the firefighter training tower have yielded fruit
I have always wanted to be a firefighter since I was young. After graduating from college, I realized this dream and joined the new firefighter training team at the end of last year to participate in onboarding training.
After joining the new training team, I realized that our daily work, life, and performances in movies and TV dramas were quite different. There was no training in water and fire, nor was there any sudden disaster or disaster that required me to go to rescue. Most of the time, we stood in a military position under the scorching sun, throwing and throwing a water belt. However, my training squad leader Deng Muye is like the unsmiling squad leader in movies and TV dramas. He often says, “If firefighters don’t have a strong body and solid professional skills, how can they save people?”
During my time with Principal Deng, I noticed that he seemed to have a bit of a cleanliness fetish. He has high requirements for our internal affairs, the bedding should not have wrinkles, the tabletop should not have dust, and the floor should not have garbage. He often reminds us to strictly demand ourselves and maintain a good level of internal affairs and mental outlook. Therefore, under his guidance and training, our class can receive the “Internal Health Mobile Red Flag” every month.
The same applies to queue training. In order to ensure that the movements of all team members in the class are neat and uniform, during training, Class Leader Deng required all team members to take steps at the same time, raise their legs and maintain the same height. Once someone’s movements are not standardized or neat, he will immediately call a stop and lead the team to start over.
Unconsciously entering early summer, but the weather is already very hot. There is a row of apricot trees under the training tower of the new training team. The cicadas on the trees chirp incessantly, and our complaints keep coming and going. Class monitor Deng said to us in a solemn tone, “The hardships and tiredness we face now will turn into your own weapons. When you become a true firefighter, these weapons will help you overcome obstacles.”
One morning, wearing a full set of combat uniforms, we were conducting a climbing hook ladder exercise under the training tower. With a command, several teammates rushed towards the training tower carrying the hook ladder, flipping and lifting the ladder, and securely hanging the hook ladder on the window sill of the second floor of the training tower… After several movements, everyone was sweating profusely and suffering unbearably. However, Class Leader Deng, who guided us through our training under the scorching sun, remained unchanged.
While resting in the shade under the apricot tree, Class Leader Deng told us, “High temperature resistance is also an important part of firefighter training. Wearing battle uniforms to enter the fire scene for firefighting and rescue, and wearing bee repellent clothing to dispose of wasp nests in the scorching sun all require firefighters to withstand high temperatures in order to have enough time to complete the task.” After saying this, he took off his battle uniform. I saw that his clothes were soaked in sweat, and at that moment, I realized that I had suffered a bit Sweating a little is nothing, I truly admire him from the depths of my heart.
The afternoon was rope climbing training. This training requires firefighters to cooperate with their hands and feet to climb from the ground to the window position on the 4th floor of the training tower, and requires high comprehensive qualities such as physical fitness and coordination. As the only team member in the class who did not meet the standards, I became the key “care” object of Class Leader Deng: “Your arm is too thin. You should eat more meat in your daily life, and stay behind to practice push ups after the exercises.”
When I heard that I needed to practice more, I was already very discouraged and wanted to avoid it. I began to doubt whether I could handle this job. Class monitor Deng saw my thoughts and said to me, “Not everyone can complete all the training tasks very well from the beginning, it’s just that you didn’t see them when they trained hard.”
Late at night, class monitor Deng found me and talked to me about the firefighting and rescue operations he had participated in. In a factory explosion accident, he, as the team leader, immediately led the attack team to set up a diversion position at the pipe gallery refinery, responsible for extinguishing the fire in the relatively closed equipment building on the side. In order to quickly control the fire, he led two teammates into and out of the equipment building seven times, extinguishing the fire at close range. After an hour of firefighting, the fire was successfully brought under control. I asked Class Leader Deng, “Are you not afraid of such a big fire?” He said, “I didn’t think so much at that time. I just wanted to extinguish the fire as soon as possible. Time is life. If we don’t extinguish it in time, if there is another explosion, the safety of the surrounding factories and the public will be threatened.”
Nowadays, Captain Deng is already a firefighter with extensive rescue experience. He said he used to be helpless, but never thought of giving up. He wanted to prove that he was not inferior to others. Since he chose to become a firefighter, he had no regrets and was proud to protect his hometown through this way.
Since chatting with Class Leader Deng that night, I have become more clear about why I want to be a firefighter, because joining the fire brigade and protecting my hometown is a very proud thing. In the following days, I began to train hard. In the morning, I woke up half an hour earlier than my teammates, completed 100 push ups and 100 frog jumps; Before lunch break, complete 100 abdominal exercises in bed; In the evening, I took the initiative to ask Class Leader Deng to help me practice the subjects I learned that day. After unremitting efforts, I, who used to be as thin as wood, have also developed strong muscles on my arms.
At this moment, looking up again at the row of apricot trees, perhaps due to the new trees, the apricot flowers have withered almost, but have not yet borne fruit. “Class monitor Deng, when will the apricot trees bear fruit?” I asked curiously. He smiled and said, “Maybe we’ll have to wait until you leave the new training team.” I suddenly realized that our training has been going on for almost 6 months.
For some reason, as we eagerly await the fruit of the apricot tree every day, suddenly we don’t want to see the fruit so quickly.
The days of training have passed day by day, our skin has tanned, our personality has become stronger, our physical fitness and skills have improved, and we have all grown a lot through honing.
“Class monitor Deng, the apricot tree under the training tower has yielded results!” One morning, everyone exclaimed in amazement. On the same day, in the final assessment of the new training team, not only did all members of our class pass the assessment, but we also achieved first place in the total score.
We bid farewell to the new training team and class leader Deng. I think parting is only temporary. I believe we will continue to fight side by side on the battlefield in the future, guarding our beautiful hometown together.
