Writing an Answer Sheet in Firefighting Battles
Fighting against the “fire demon” and racing against time, he bravely advances in the battle between life and death; He has been engaged in firefighting and rescue work for 19 years. He has participated in more than 3000 fire fighting and more than 3600 emergency rescue operations, rescuing and evacuating more than 1000 trapped people… He is Zhang Haiyang, the director of the Ciqikou firefighting and rescue station in Shapingba District, Chongqing. This year, Zhang Haiyang was named by the Central Propaganda Department as the “National Model of Learning from Lei Feng in Posts”, which is just one of the many honors he has received. In the past 19 years, Zhang Haiyang has won one second and two third class personal honors, and won many honors such as “exemplary individual of the National Emergency Management System”, “exemplary individual of Earthquake Relief”, “Double Top Ten Excellent Grass roots Leader”. Behind the heavy honor, this firefighter is fulfilling his solemn oath with his original intention and actions, and writing the youth answer sheet of “Flame Blue” while going through fire and water.
Go upstream in the opposite direction
Charge ahead and lead the formation
In the face of disasters, Zhang Haiyang always charges ahead and fights where the people need it the most. In the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Zhang Haiyang and his teammates were the first batch of rescue personnel to arrive in the earthquake stricken area. The scene at that time was very tragic, and lives buried under the ruins could be found at any time during the rescue process. When approaching trapped individuals, mechanical equipment should not be used easily, as accidentally moving a brick when unsure of the stable support point may endanger the safety of the trapped individual. If too much force is applied, it may also cause the collapse of remaining buildings. A grandmother who is over sixty years old was buried under the ruins. Due to the inability to use a large excavator on site, and the elderly being trapped for a long time, her life is in danger. At the critical moment, Zhang Haiyang and his teammates could only dig out the rescue passage with their bare hands, blistering their hands and bleeding from shoulder abrasions, but they didn’t care at all. Zhang Haiyang constantly encouraged the trapped elderly to “hold on, hold on a little longer” and shouted to his teammates, “Hurry up, hurry up again…” After 14 hours of effort, the elderly person was finally saved. At this point, Zhang Haiyang was already limp and his throat was swollen to the point where he couldn’t speak. However, he didn’t rest and immediately began rescuing the next trapped person. Zhang Haiyang said that for a period of time after the rescue, he often woke up from his dream and thought, “Oh no, did I sleep too long? Hurry up and go save someone!”
In 2015, Zhang Haiyang was the first to drill into the bottom of a tanker truck to block the leak during rescue efforts. That was a small oil tanker truck. Due to the aging gasket at the connection between the upper and lower pipelines of the oil tank, diesel fuel kept leaking out and flowed into the sewer along the road slope. The situation was extremely dangerous, and if it caught fire, the consequences would be unimaginable. Zhang Haiyang immediately instructed personnel to set up on-site vigilance, evacuate surrounding residents, and locate the sewer outlet to observe the direction of flow. Obstacles were set up inside the sewer to prevent diesel from continuing to spread and causing greater pollution and losses. Afterwards, he was the first to drill into the bottom of the car, observe the leakage of the oil tank truck, and find copper and rubber to fill the gaps. Then, he plugged the flange valve in to control the flow and speed of diesel leakage. At that time, the external environment was complex, and the oil tanker truck was at risk of explosion at any time. However, he remained at the bottom of the truck until the shuttle bus arrived and finally got up. The continuous leakage of diesel soaked his combat suit, and the strong odor persisted for three days without dissipating
For 19 years, such emergency rescue has been a common occurrence for Zhang Haiyang.
In August 2020, the Jialing River flood peak passed through, and many areas such as Ciqikou Ancient Town were engulfed by floods. In the emergency rescue, Zhang Haiyang led his team members to build a rescue channel using fire boats and ropes, and relay to escort the people onto the ship for transfer. When encountering elderly people, children, and paralyzed patients with limited mobility, he and his team members waded into the water and carried everyone to a safe area. After two days and nights of intense rescue efforts, they successfully evacuated 165 trapped people and recovered more than 500000 yuan in property losses. After the rescue was over, Zhang Haiyang realized that his left leg had been bitten by leeches… In addition, he had been soaked in water for too long, and the next morning he also experienced symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. Nevertheless, he remained steadfast on the front line of flood control, leading the team to clear mud and wash the streets, interpreting the responsibility and responsibility of “Flame Blue” with practical actions.
My teammates said that whether it’s firefighting or emergency rescue, Zhang Haiyang always rushes ahead. “When an emergency occurs, I actually have no bottom in my heart, but I don’t feel scared either. I only think about how to save people and extinguish the fire,” said Zhang Haiyang.
Struggling and rolling
Blazing fire to refine and inspire elite soldiers
“The extremely harsh environment of high temperature, thick smoke, noise, and darkness is a dual challenge for everyone, both mentally and physically. Every week, Zhang Haiyang leads his team into the smoke and heat training room to conduct practical training on simulated fire scenes, in order to always be prepared for firefighting and rescue.” This is a compulsory course for us firefighters, “Zhang Haiyang said.
In order to ensure that every team member has good psychological qualities and professional skills, Zhang Haiyang always takes the lead in demonstrating during each training session. During the training process, Zhang Haiyang, dressed in a firefighting suit and wearing an air respirator, would be tied with a rope, with the other end of the rope connected to his teammates. He would encourage his teammates while walking in the dark in the winding and constantly obstructed smoke and heat room. If some new firefighters are unable to overcome psychological barriers, Zhang Haiyang will not hesitate to accompany them repeatedly in the smoke and heat training room until the new firefighters can complete the training independently. Zhang Haiyang will continue to teach his team members methods to overcome fear and adjust their breathing rhythm, “keeping a low posture, exploring steps, and relying on the bottom of the load-bearing wall to minimize risks.”.
“Sweat more in peacetime, dare to charge during wartime.” This is a phrase often spoken by Zhang Haiyang. He believes that although smoke heat training is difficult, the real fire scene is even more brutal. “As firefighters, our responsibility is to fight against the ‘fire demon’. Only by developing strong firefighting and rescue skills through regular training can we safeguard the safety of people’s lives and property at critical moments.”
Not only that, Zhang Haiyang also led his team to study the tactics of extinguishing high-rise building fires over and over again.
How to quickly and targetedly complete the installation of water hoses in high-rise buildings? They studied and tried many methods. Zhang Haiyang said, “These preparations are all aimed at achieving rapid response in the event of a high-rise building fire. Rapid response means knowing what to do, what to do, how to do it, and what equipment to bring in the first time. We rehearse disaster rescue time and time again, scrutinize each rescue detail, find problems through drills, and then use the new knowledge and methods we learn to solve problems, making rescue efficiency higher.”
In December 2020, a high-rise residential building in Chongqing caught fire. Under the unique “chimney effect” of high-rise buildings, the debris piled up on the rain sheds and balconies outside the building is quickly ignited. When Zhang Haiyang and his team arrived at the scene, the entire tall building was in a three-dimensional and fiercely burning state. With the experience accumulated through practical training, Zhang Haiyang led his team to carry water guns and break into the sea of fire. Not only did he extinguish the open fire in the shortest possible time, successfully evacuated and rescued more than 100 households, but none of the firefighters involved in the fire fighting were injured.
What is the proudest thing in 19 years of work? “Perhaps for so many years, none of the firefighters in the team have suffered serious injuries during police operations,” said Zhang Haiyang. While ensuring the safety of the people, he hopes that his brothers can also be safe.
Be Considerate
Tough guys also have a “warm male heart”
In his work, as a grassroots team leader, Zhang Haiyang is an “iron blooded tough guy”; In life, he is a “warm-hearted man”. For the team members, Zhang Haiyang is more like a brother than a friend.
He always gets along well with his team members and often pays attention to their training and living conditions. He is meticulous and can even judge whether the team members are worried based on their expressions and appetite. Once a team member encounters difficulties, Zhang Haiyang always makes every effort to help. The backbone participated in the regional competition, and Zhang Haiyang took the initiative to stay up late and work overtime with them, helping to revise the courseware and lecture notes; The team members were unhappy due to their failure in the exam. When Zhang Haiyang found out, he approached him like his brother and had a heart to heart conversation, encouraging him to continue his efforts. He also took the initiative to find a teacher to tutor him.
Many new firefighters are leaving home for the first time and have many difficulties adapting after joining the team. In order to help new firefighters integrate into the team more quickly, Zhang Haiyang leads by example and cares deeply. Sometimes, Zhang Haiyang even invites old firefighters who have already left the team to come back and share their stories and experiences with the new firefighters, making them more recognized by the fire rescue team. Some new firefighters have poor physical foundations, so Zhang Haiyang gave up his rest time and conducted targeted training with them. Over the years, Zhang Haiyang has brought out more than 100 new firefighters, many of whom have successfully taken exams and become the backbone of their unit.
Zhang Haiyang’s warmth is not only reflected in his concern for his teammates, but also in his assistance to the residents in his jurisdiction.
From 2010 to 2018, Zhang Haiyang and his Ciqikou Fire Rescue Station in Shapingba District, Chongqing City have been assisting a struggling family in their jurisdiction until they were relocated due to demolition. Zhang Haiyang and his teammates learned that there was a 70 year old man living with a girl with intellectual disabilities in the jurisdiction. They not only raised love donations for the elderly and children, but also brought rice, noodles, oil, etc. to comfort the elderly at their homes during festivals… There are many such acts of kindness, and Zhang Haiyang is practicing the oath of “people’s fire protection for the people” with practical actions.
Having experienced the struggle between life and death, as well as the rescue efforts in various disasters, 37 year old Zhang Haiyang’s original intention remains unchanged, and he deeply feels the heavy responsibility on his shoulders. “Firefighters are a very sacred profession, and our responsibility is to contribute everything to maintaining the safety of people’s lives and property, and maintaining social stability.” Zhang Haiyang said that only by constantly motivating ourselves to do better can we deserve the handsome “Flame Blue” uniform and the title of “Reverse Walker”.
